Shadowfell marillier6/27/2023 These are all outlawed and punishable by death, unless it would work in the favor of the king, Keldec. There is a vast array of canny gifts, from being able to see the future, to altering people’s minds, to just heightened senses and skills. In this world, some people are blessed with canny gifts. Juliet Marillier’s writing flows so eloquently that it was impossible not to become addicted to this world after chapter one. It was so magical and whimsical, yet so full of adventure and mystery. Shadowfell was everything I could ever want in fae story. “It seemed to me it would be better to die standing up to a tyrant than to survive as a tool of his will.” Never in my wildest dreams did I expect the start of this series to blow me away like it did. I’ve felt sort of reading slumpy after A Court of Mist and Fury, so I figured a new series would be just what I needed. I offhandedly bought this series from Book Outlet one day and it’s just been sitting on my shelves.

The year is now 584 AU, it’s been four years after the events in Best Served Cold. I loved it almost as much as I loved Before They Are Hanged, which is a LOT. The Heroes has been claimed by many Abercrombie’s fans to be his best book so far, and although I disagree because in my opinion that crown still belongs to Last Argument of Kings, I rank The Heroes as his third-best work so far. With the low-key fangirling out of the way, let's get into the story, shall we? If you haven't read anything by Kingfisher yet, in my opinion, The Hollow Places would be a great place to start. The humor and heart brought to her stories is refreshing in the Horror space. It's hard to nail weird, yet she does, and we love to see it! The Hollow Places is a super WEIRD, extremely well-written Horror story, penned in Kingfisher's signature quirky style.
